January 21, 2019 | UHCL Staff
University of Houston-Clear Lake and University of Texas Medical Branch will co-host
the annual Greater Houston Area STEM Conference to be held March 2, 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.,
in the Bayou Building, 2700 Bay Area Blvd., Houston.
More than 200 educators from over 20 school districts in the Houston-Galveston and
surrounding areas will attend this one-day event. The conference, titled “New Horizons
and Innovations in STEM,” will feature concurrent presentations, state of the art
lab tours, and STEM-related exhibitors.
Professor of Research and Applied Statistics Michelle Peters and Associate Professor
of Curriculum and Instruction Brenda Weiser, both from UH-Clear Lake’s College of
Education, will be co-chairing the 2019 STEM conference.
“STEM education is the key to our future,” Peters said. “The challenge is that few
truly understand what STEM should look like in the classroom. Educators have a good
grasp on the key components - science, technology, engineering and mathematics - but
struggle with the challenge of integrating.”
“We’ll have presentations that demonstrate how to accomplish this integration which
teachers will be able to use in their classrooms,” Weiser said. “Not only will local
educators present but, some of our own UHCL engineering, computer science and digital
arts faculty are presenting as well. We anticipate having over 20 exhibitors focusing
on the importance of STEM and some faculty will have exhibits on projects they’re
currently researching. This is a practitioner-based conference designed for educators.”
Among exhibitors attending are Artist Boat, the Houston Zoo, Fischer Scientific, Accelerated
Learning, NOAA, Accelerated Learning/STEM Scope, Space Art Program, Geophysical Society
of Houston, and the Galveston Bay Foundation.
Teachers who attend will receive seven hours of continuing professional education
credits.
