With the excitement of summer orientation, new buildings on campus and registering
for courses, many new University of Houston-Clear Lake students are gearing up for
their first semester on campus. Before long, classes will be in full swing. For incoming
students, the transition to university life is a significant adjustment.
“The transition to a university is more rigorous than high school and community college
with added critical thinking and reading skills required to be successful,” said Becca
Guler, learning specialist in University of Houston-Clear Lake’s Student Success Center.
That’s why the center is helping students prepare for university life before they
arrive on campus at “#AreYouReadyforTHIS?” on Aug. 17 from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
The event will include a full day of interactive sessions that cover effective reading
and note-taking strategies, financial literacy and career exploration. Students will
also be able to ask questions and get valuable advice from faculty, advisers and current
UHCL students. Guler added that the main goal is not only to prepare students for
academic life, but also for them to experience the variety of resources available
during their time at UHCL.
“Our biggest job is to make life for a student less painful and more doable,” Guler
said. “The event will give students a realistic preview of what UHCL is like, so that
they walk in to the first day of class knowing how to set and achieve their goals,
find a school/life balance and who they can go to for support.”
“#AreYouReadyforTHIS?” is free and includes lunch, but seating is limited to 75 students. For
questions, contact the Student Success Center at 281-283-2450.
