UHCL's Art Gallery plans Spanish-themed fundraising ball

Students and visitors to University of Houston-Clear Lake may not realize they’re familiar with Spanish artist Pablo Serrano, but if they’ve walked in the front entrance of the Bayou Building, they’ve seen quite a significant example – or two – of his work. Serrano’s bronze sphere sculptures, titled “Spiritus Mundi,” are the largest displays of public art on the UH-Clear Lake campus. On May 19 from 5-8 p.m. in Atrium II, UHCL’s Art Gallery will be paying homage to Serrano’s art with the Mundi Ball, a fundraising event featuring a Spanish classical guitarist and a contemporary style flamenco dancer.

“We have organized this Spanish-themed reception to help us raise funds to support the Art Gallery’s expansion project,” said Art Gallery Director Jeff Bowen. “The expansion will add 400 square feet of exhibition space and 125 square feet of additional office space. We hope the renovation takes place over the summer and our plan is to have it completed by fall 2018.”

Bowen said that the reception will have an open bar featuring a signature cocktail called Tinto de Verano, a sangria-lemonade spritzer combination, as well as tapas. “Faculty and artists from the community are donating art and baskets for a silent auction that will also support the UH-Clear Lake Student Art Association,” he said.

Dress is cocktail attire – or flamenco. “I’m wearing white with a red sash,” Bowen said. “It’s my running-with-the-bulls attire.”

Tickets to the event are $50 in advance, and $60 at the door. Sponsorships are available.
