UHCL’s Willis tells grads: ‘Dream big and enjoy the detours’

University of Houston-Clear Lake Professor of Instructional Design and Technology Jana Willis, center, delivered the noon commencement address for fall 2017 graduates on Dec. 17 at NRG Arena, Houston. Nearly 450 students graduated from the College of Education and College of Science and Engineering at the noon event. In the afternoon, 550 students graduated from UHCL’s College of Business and the College of Human Sciences and Humanities. Willis, an alumna of UHCL whose career as an educator spans more than 20 years, told graduates, “Always dream, dream big and enjoy the detours (in life).” She was named Outstanding Educator of the Year by the Texas Forestry Association in 2016 and the National Project Learning Tree Outstanding Educator of the Year in 2017. Willis is pictured with Professor of Educational Foundations Mark D. Shermis, dean of the College of Education, and UHCL President Ira K. Blake.
