Welcome Week helps new students transition to UHCL
August 17, 2017 | UHCL Staff
A new semester and busy schedules can be stressful. That’s why University of Houston-Clear
Lake takes a whole week to plan fun, engaging events to welcome and orient new and
returning students to Hawk life and ensure a great start to the new school year.
“We make a lot of plans for Welcome Week,” said Director of Orientation and New Student
Programs Angie Montelongo. “Beginning Aug. 28, we have an event every day that we
hope will help students start their year off in a positive and engaging way.”
- Aug. 28: Kickoff: Giveaways -- Welcome new and returning students in the Atrium of
the Bayou Building, 12 p.m and 5 p.m.
- Aug. 29: Bingo and Big Prizes — Win a Pyrex bowl for microwaving food, coloring kits
for stress relief, gift cards, and other back-to-school prizes in the Bayou Building
Garden Room, 6 p.m.
- Aug. 30: Popcorn and Pennants — Make-your-own pennant design while enjoying blue and
green cheddar popcorn in the Student Services and Classroom Building and Delta Lobby,
11 a.m. and 4 p.m.
- Aug. 31: Picnic on the Plaza — celebrate National Eat Outside Day as a Hawk! Bring
your lunch and hang out with new friends at Alumni Plaza, 11:30 a.m.
- Sept. 1: Welcome Back Bash — a long-standing Hawk tradition returns! Get a T-shirt,
have some food, and enjoy live music sponsored by Campus Activities Board and performed
by Molly and the Ringwalds. Find out how to get involved on campus by checking out
the activity tables hosted by community partners, UH-Clear Lake offices and student
organizations. This fun, free event begins in the Atrium of the Bayou Building at
5 p.m.
“We hope Welcome Week helps students get oriented to campus and makes the transition
to college life easy and fun for new students,” Montelongo said. “The Office of Orientation
and New Student Programs stays connected with students throughout the year. We have
some stress-release activities during midterms, a ‘Thanks’ program in November, and
another giveaway and ‘finals survival’ activities at the end of the semester.”
