UHCL yoga class has benefits far beyond the mat

University of Houston-Clear Lake’s Friday Morning Continuing Education program is
now offering the university’s first-ever yoga class taught by Associate Professor
of School Psychology Julia Englund Strait. The beginning yoga class meets Fridays
at 1 p.m. for eight weeks. Strait said she hoped people would try it, not just to
reap the physical benefits of relaxation or flexibility, but to discover the mental
and emotional benefits that can be achieved through the regular practice of yoga.
Strait, who’s also director of UH-Clear Lake’s Psychological Services Clinic, is primarily
focused on studying and creating behavioral assessments. “This class is a pilot program
as well as a yoga class,” Strait said. “I’d like to give people the option of participating
in some research I’m doing that involves answering just a few questions about stress
levels and mental health. At the end of the eight weeks, they’ll get a progress report
to show whether yoga has made a difference in their overall mental and emotional health.”
