University of Houston-Clear Lake graduate student Justin Hansen will spend the rest of 2018 and most of 2019 searching the estuaries of rivers, streams and bayous along the Texas Gulf Coast for American eels, specifically glass elvers (young eels). Hansen is working with UHCL’s Environmental Institute of Houston on a grant from Texas Parks and Wildlife.

Grant replaces river research equipment lost to Harvey

The Environmental Institute of Houston at UH-Clear Lake was able to replace digital tools called Hobos Trolls, thanks to fast-track funding from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine. The recent award was one of 11 NASEM grants to assist in the recovery of Gulf Coast scientific research efforts impacted by hurricanes Harvey and Irma. The grants help with repair, replacement or recovery of equipment, data or other research materials damaged or lost.
