First-gen student, administrator share how college changed their lives

The face of today’s college student continues to change, PBS NewsHour reported in a special series that focused on college student populations. The phrase “first generation college student” was unheard of just a decade ago, but now, “first-gen” students are increasing in numbers across college campuses in America, including at University of Houston-Clear Lake, where about 35% of the student body identified themselves as first generation college students on their applications.
UHCL working to expand study abroad programs

After encounter with autistic child, UHCL alumna found her career path

When Lynsey Jackson received her bachelor’s in psychology, she wasn’t sure what her career path should be. After seeing a bulletin board with a flyer advertising an information session about working with children with autism, she thought it might be interesting. She was right: It led to her receiving her Master of Arts in Behavior Analysis from University of Houston-Clear Lake, and she believes she has found her life’s calling.
UHCL fall commencement ceremonies Dec. 15 at NRG Arena

Over 1270 University of Houston-Clear Lake students are expected to cross the stage at two commencement ceremonies on Sunday, Dec. 15 at NRG Arena, 1 NRG Park, Houston. A total of 850 will receive bachelor’s degrees; 424 will receive their master’s degree and 14 will receive their doctorate.

Communications prof starts career in TV, finds real reward in teaching

Anna Klyueva began her academic career in studying economics in her native Tajikistan. While in her freshman year there, she was invited to audition for a position on a popular local television show. At the audition, she was “warned” that once she got into the media world, she would never want to turn back. Now an assistant professor of communication at University of Houston-Clear Lake, Klyueva says that her philosophy of teaching has been to keep one foot in the profession and the other in education, so that what she teaches and assigns is always relevant.

Assistant Professor of Industrial/Organizational Psychology Lisa Sublett decided that teaching was her calling after a rewarding experience as a teaching assistant during her last year of graduate school.

The Sultan Qaboos Cultural Center hosted a dinner event at South Shore Harbour Resort ahead of the University of Houston-Clear Lake-SQCC Energy and Environmental Stewardship Conference earlier this month. The dinner and the conference were attended by a delegation of Omani diplomats led by Her Excellency Hunaina S. Al Mughairy, ambassador of Oman to the United States. The evening’s keynote speaker was His Excellency Salim Bin Nasser Al Aufi, undersecretary of Oman’s Ministry of Oil and Gas.

While in Louvain-la-Neuve, I gave a talk for museum professionals and scholars from the local region. Musée L, the university museum in Louvain-la-Neuve, has developed a number of projects with scholars from the university. These partnerships are part of an effort to develop stronger ties between the museum and the university.
'Great day for all of us': NASA Johnson Space Center, UHCL expand partnership

University of Houston-Clear Lake would not exist had it not been for a request made in 1964 by then-NASA Johnson Space Center Director Robert Gilruth to then-University of Houston President Philip Hoffman to establish a permanent institution of higher education accessible to JSC staff, scientists and engineers. In 1974, UH-Clear Lake opened its doors, and in continued celebration of their shared bond, NASA JSC and UHCL signed the new Space Act Agreement and Annex on Oct. 1, affirming and expanding their partnership for the benefit of the entire community.
