UHCL social work profs make list of outstanding practitioners

In honor of the 50th anniversary of the Graduate College of Social Work at University of Houston, 50 GCSW alumni have been recognized as outstanding social work practitioners who embody the college’s vision of social justice. University of Houston-Clear Lake’s professors of social work Heather Kanenberg and Roberta Leal were named to the list and will be among the honorees at a celebratory event to be held Aug. 17.

Back in 2007, when Deborah Griffin was at a neighborhood pool party, taking a neighbor’s suggestion to have a 50th anniversary homecoming party for the neighborhood sounded like a fun idea. After all, Timber Cove was no ordinary subdivision. Timber Cove had been home to four of the seven original Mercury astronauts who moved to the area to begin working on the newly-established manned space flight program in the early 1960s.

Joseph L. Staley will join University of Houston-Clear Lake’s leadership team as vice president for University Advancement beginning July 1. Staley, who was vice chancellor for Resource Development at Johnson and Wales University in Providence, Rhode Island for four years, has spent nearly his entire career in fundraising for higher education.
