UHCL celebrates 45 years, spotlights outstanding professor and alumni

Over 300 University of Houston-Clear Lake faculty, staff and alumni gathered on Oct. 12 to celebrate the university’s 45th year as the region’s leading institution of higher education, and to recognize Professor of Management Information Systems Vance Etnyre, who received the 2019 Outstanding Professor Award, as well as Mary Anne Brelinsky and Phyllis Saathoff-Oliver, recipients of the Early Achievement Award and the Distinguished Alumni Award, respectively.

Trio After Jack to bring Appalachian 'hot folk' to Bayou Theater

Performing tight, three-part harmonies from the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, After Jack is a musical celebration of togetherness. Named 2014 Americana Vocal Group of the Year by the Appalachian Cultural Music Association, the trio will bring their particular brand of “hot folk” to the Bayou Theater at University of Houston-Clear Lake Thursday, Nov. 7 at 7:30 p.m.

Las Cafeteras to combine vibrant East L.A. sound and positive message in 'party' performance

For those who have never been to a Las Cafeteras concert, vocalist Hector Flores says it’s easy to describe what it’s like to experience a live performance. “It’s like the best backyard party you’ve ever been to, times two,” he said. The six-member group based in Los Angeles will use traditional instrumentation to perform “everything from Caribbean to California” at the Bayou Theater at University of Houston-Clear Lake on Sunday, Oct. 20 at 7:30 p.m.

Even if you thought that attending a performance of contemporary ballet isn’t something you’d be interested in, Pascal Rioult, artistic director and choreographer of Rioult Dance NY, says it’s not about ballet, it’s about people. Rioult, a New York based modern dance company will be performing at the Bayou Theater at University of Houston-Clear Lake Saturday, Oct. 19 at 7:30 p.m.

While in Louvain-la-Neuve, I gave a talk for museum professionals and scholars from the local region. Musée L, the university museum in Louvain-la-Neuve, has developed a number of projects with scholars from the university. These partnerships are part of an effort to develop stronger ties between the museum and the university.

President Blake reiterates UHCL’s unique purpose: ‘pursue space, advance humanity, protect the Earth’

University of Houston-Clear Lake President Ira K. Blake says that in order to keep pace with an ever-changing world, the institution will strive to teach present and future students not only how to self-adapt to change, but how to lead those changes. “Society needs people who know how to be compassionate and honest,” Blake told students, faculty, alumni and honored guests at her State of the University address.

During my residence as a visiting scholar in Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium, I’ve been giving talks to various audiences at the Université Catholique de Louvain, and at the Musee L, the university museum. I first gave a talk in a lecture series for graduate students and professors in art history and archaeology. I spoke about “object biography” as an approach to ancient artifacts.

'Great day for all of us': NASA Johnson Space Center, UHCL expand partnership

University of Houston-Clear Lake would not exist had it not been for a request made in 1964 by then-NASA Johnson Space Center Director Robert Gilruth to then-University of Houston President Philip Hoffman to establish a permanent institution of higher education accessible to JSC staff, scientists and engineers. In 1974, UH-Clear Lake opened its doors, and in continued celebration of their shared bond, NASA JSC and UHCL signed the new Space Act Agreement and Annex on Oct. 1, affirming and expanding their partnership for the benefit of the entire community.

Sultanate of Oman, UHCL team up for science diplomacy conference

University of Houston-Clear Lake will host the Sultan Qaboos Cultural Center’s 10th Annual Conference Wednesday, Oct. 23 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The conference is a key educational initiative of the Sultanate of Oman and is titled, “UHCL-SQCC Energy and Environmental Stewardship: Oman and the U.S.”
