Ragtime orchestra combines music, silent film at UHCL

Named for iconic Texas-born ragtime composer Scott Joplin’s 1901 composition, “The Peacherine Rag,” the Peacherine Ragtime Society Orchestra will transport the audience back to the era of silent movies and syncopated rhythms at the Bayou Theater on March 8 at 5 p.m.

To commemorate the 400th anniversary of the first documented arrival of Africans on American shores, the Ghanaian government organized a Year of Return Trip and Conference beginning last August. Because University of Houston-Clear Lake President Ira K. Blake believed it was important to have representation at the event, Visiting Lecturer of Criminology Comeka Anderson Diaz, who has lived and studied in Ghana, attended the conference and participated in the events.

Nairobi scholar visits UHCL to continue work on establishing international partnership

University of Houston-Clear Lake has been expanding its study abroad options for students to include United States International University-Africa in Nairobi. To facilitate the two universities’ ultimate goal of being able to offer joint degrees, Philip Machoka, instructor of information systems and technology, spent 12 days as a visiting scholar at UH-Clear Lake to learn more about the university’s technology infrastructure.
