When Ankita Verma and Astha Sharma arrived in Houston from Chhattisgarh, India on Aug. 9 to begin their graduate studies at University of Houston-Clear Lake, they were prepared to learn about a foreign culture, study in a new university, and begin a new chapter in their lives. However, within less than two weeks of their arrival, Mother Nature threw in a plot twist that no one expected: a very unpleasant visit from Hurricane Harvey.
Programs raise community awareness of domestic violence

The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence reports that although the rates of domestic violence have been declining, one in four women and one in seven men suffer physical abuse from an intimate partner in the United States. “At University of Houston-Clear Lake, we are committed to providing an educational, working and living environment where students and staff are free from sex discrimination of any kind,” said Title IX Coordinator Corey Benson. “October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and the Office of Human Resources and UH-Clear Lake Police Department have partnered to present a number of programs to help recognize and respond to domestic violence.”

In the classroom, Associate Professor of Sociology Stephen M. Cherry’s aims to offer students the broadest, most diverse possible educational experiences so they can develop insight and perspective into things that are often far outside the realm of their daily lives. To that end, Cherry, a practicing Buddhist, is helping to organize The Tibetan Perspectives of the Buddha’s Teachings Tour, presented by the Gaden Shartse monks and sponsored by UH-Clear Lake’s College of Human Science and Humanities, to visit the university from Nov. 6-10.

For Jake Beck, the creator of “Game Over Life,” a solo-artist show to be performed at the Bayou Theater at University of Houston-Clear Lake on Oct. 26 at 7:30 p.m., it wasn’t a book or a song that helped him cope with the challenges of life. It was video gaming.

For her, the highlight of teaching the seminar is inviting guest lecturers to share life experiences from vastly different perspectives in the Women’s and Gender Studies Speaker Series, which takes place Wednesdays through Oct. 25 from 4-5:30 p.m. at the Hawk’s Overlook in the Alfred R.
