Four years ago, University of Houston-Clear Lake added freshmen and sophomores to its student population, which since its inception in 1974 had included only upperclassmen, graduate and doctoral students. Baytown resident Makayla Ellis was among those who enrolled in UH-Clear Lake’s first freshman class, and although college wasn’t what she thought it would be at first, she found her way and happily accepted her bachelor’s degree in business management on May 20, becoming a member of UHCL’s first graduating freshman class.

Rosselle Helms has been pursing a bachelor of science in marketing at University of Houston-Clear Lake for a long time. It hasn’t always been easy, so being awarded the 2018 American Association for Women in Community Colleges National Scholarship made it easier for her to take one more step toward her goal of completing her degree by summer 2019.

Nearly 1,300 students graduated this spring at University of Houston-Clear Lake. Two commencement ceremonies were held on Sunday, May 20, at NRG Arena. Almost 1,100 students chose to walk across the stage.

Recognizing dedication and commitment, University of Houston-Clear Lake held the 40th annual Faculty and Staff Awards ceremony in early April. President Ira K. Blake with UHCL interim Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost Glen Houston and interim Vice President of Administration and Finance Usha Mathew presented service awards and distinctive honors to staff and faculty. “As a team, we are quite advantaged to have many faculty and staff who decide to stay on our team,” said Blake. “As others have also done in the past – our honorees today have assisted with our growth as a student-focused, community-minded and partnership-oriented university.”

UHCL shares peer mentoring program success at national conference

Since fall 2017, University of Houston-Clear Lake has been successfully implementing a peer mentoring program as the integral part of a $3.7 million Hispanic Serving Institution STEM grant titled Pathways to STEM Careers. The grant supports Hispanic and low-income students pursing degrees in all science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields. Program Director for HSI STEM Grant Benito Vasquez, accompanied by Senior Academic Advisor for the College of Education Carmen Conley and three undergraduate students working as paid peer mentors in the program, attended an HSI national conference from March 24-28 in Chicago. They presented a proposal to other colleges nationwide, highlighting the successes and challenges they faced in building the peer mentoring program.
