Children enrolled in this summer’s Art School for Children program at University of Houston-Clear Lake will be celebrating the school’s 40th anniversary, but they’ll also be learning about art that came from halfway around the world and depicts the way people lived, worked and traveled to at least the late first millennium B.C.

Middle schoolers learn engineering process in first Hawk STEAM Academy

In a new summer science program geared toward middle school students, the Center for Educational Programs at University of Houston-Clear Lake is hosting two week-long Hawk STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, math) Academy camps in which campers will work in research and development teams as they explore Newton’s laws of motion. Roger Rovekamp, a robotics engineer at Dexterous Robotics Laboratory at NASA Johnson Space Center, discussed the importance and various applications of robotics technology with nine student engineers at a lunch presentation on June 5.

Fall 2018 Common Reader selection explores themes of identity, vocation

A selection committee composed of faculty, staff and a student representative have recommended the book “Callings: The Purpose and Passion of Work” by Dave Isay to be the focus of University of Houston-Clear Lake’s fall 2018 Common Reader Program. The committee chose the book because it explores overarching themes that resonate with the UH-Clear Lake student population.

Bayou Theater offers season package for new season, 18 performances across all genres

With almost twice as many outstanding performances to offer Clear Lake theater-lovers this season than last, the Bayou Theater at University of Houston-Clear Lake is gearing up for a brand new season that covers almost all musical genres. “There are some great benefits we’re offering season pass buyers this year,” said Bayou Theater Managing Director Alex Malone. “Season packages go on sale at 10 a.m. on Friday, June 15.”

University of Houston-Clear Lake will host a groundbreaking ceremony for a 294-bed residence hall at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, June 12, 2700 Bay Area Blvd., Houston. The public is invited. The residence hall is scheduled to open for the fall 2019 semester.

Eight University of Houston-Clear Lake faculty, staff and students attended the Bay Area Houston Economic Partnership luncheon at South Shore Harbour Resort and Conference Center’s Crystal Ballroom on May 17. The event’s featured speaker was Reid Ryan, president of business operations for the Houston Astros.

Nearly 1,100 UHCL grads walk at spring commencement

Nearly 1,300 students graduated this spring at University of Houston-Clear Lake. Two commencement ceremonies were held on Sunday, May 20, at NRG Arena. Almost 1,100 students chose to walk across the stage.

Help maintain the beauty of the University of Houston-Clear Lake campus by volunteering at Habitat Work Days each Tuesday morning from 9-11 a.m. in June. Volunteers meet at UHCL’s Environmental Institute of Houston, located in the North Office Annex I Building, 2700 Bay Area Blvd., Houston. They assist in upkeep, including clearing paths, mulching flower beds, planting native plants, cleaning the pond and other conservation tasks. When dedicated teachers get the opportunity to help high school students connect with their peers on the other side of the world by sharing literature, they take it. A combined effort of three University of Houston-Clear Lake education professors, one UH-Clear Lake graduate student, a Skype link and a library full of students turned some simple reading assignments into unforgettable, cross-cultural and cross-global learning experiences.
