Families, friends invited to celebrate UHCL graduates

Celebrate the graduate in your family or group of friends when University of Houston-Clear Lake graduating students don caps and gowns to receive diplomas in two commencement events, Sunday, May 14.

More than 1,320 UHCL students are graduating this spring. Of them, 1,151 intend to walk across the graduation stage in NRG Arena at 1 NRG Park, Houston. Of these, 566 are undergrads, 579 will receive their master’s degrees and 6 will be conferred doctorates.

In a ceremony that begins at noon, 265 students will graduate from the College of Business and 314 from the College of Human Sciences and Humanities. At 5 p.m., 166 students will graduate from the College of Education and 396 from the College of Science and Engineering.

UH System Regent Spencer D. Armour III will deliver the commencement address at noon. UHCL alumnus J. Brett Lemley, principal of Clear Horizons Early College High School is the guest speaker at the 5 p.m. ceremony.

Armour is managing partner of Armada Gas & Oil Company in Midland, Texas, a company that invests in oil and gas production, minerals and the oilfield service sector. He also serves as chairman of ProPetro Services and is a partner at PT Petroleum LLC. Armour founded Lone Star Mud Inc. in 1986 and Sledge Drilling Corp. in 2006. Both were subsequently acquired by public companies. As a UH System regent, Armour has served as secretary of the board, chair of the board’s finance and administration committee, vice chair of the facilities, construction and master planning committee, a member of the endowment management committee and member of the executive and compensation committee.

Lemley received his master’s and doctoral degrees at UHCL, as well as his superintendent certificate. He began his career in public education as a mathematics teacher and athletics coach at Space Center Intermediate School in CCISD. In 2003, he joined Clear Lake High School as assistant principal and was promoted to associate principal in 2005. From 2007 to 2012 he was principal of Clear Lake Intermediate School and in 2012 joined Clear Horizons as principal. Since 2013, he has also served as an adjunct faculty member at UHCL, teaching courses including educational psychology and ethics, curriculum, school law, principalship and marketing of educational services for nonprofit organizations.

Guests do not need tickets to attend the commencement ceremony, and students may invite as many guests as they like. Seating for guests will be first-come, first-served.
