Kevin and Chanya Baker, proud owners of a Pasadena Habitat for Humanity home, along with their five children received a home library filled with age-appropriate books for each of the children provided by the University of Houston-Clear Lake’s Habitat for Reading program.

Begun two years ago by Sheila Baker, assistant professor of school library and information sciences, the program’s goal is to provide home libraries personally geared to the interests and reading levels of the children in Habitat for Humanity homes. The program helps nurture a habit and love of reading, and helps build the literacy skills necessary for personal, academic and lifelong success.

UHCL literacy students also develop supporting activities and videos of students modeling read-aloud strategies that are aligned to books and promote parent and child reading time.

Since its beginning in 2015, Habitat for Reading has provided book collections to seven families including 33 children. The book donations have been made possible by the Crowder Foundation and Follett Corporation.

For more information about the program or to make a donation contact Sheila Baker at bakers@uhcl.edu or Richard Zalesak at zalesak@uhcl.edu.
