Lecture Series: Bombing paradise and a philosopher’s secret

February 21, 2017 | Jim Townsend

University of Houston-Clear Lake’s Department of Liberal Arts is hosting a free lecture series featuring faculty with recently published books, beginning Wednesday, Feb. 22, 5:15-6:45 p.m.

Discuss the impact that atomic testing had on displaced Pacific islanders with Keith Parsons, author of “Bombing Paradise: Nuclear Tests in the Marshall Islands.” From 1946 to 1958, the United States detonated 67 nuclear bombs near the Bikini Atoll – an average of one every two months for 12 years.

Then discuss ‘Protagoras’ Secret Teaching’ with author Daniel Silvermintz. Before Plato, there was Protagoras, to which is attributed the quote “man is the measure of all things” – a precept that there is no such thing as absolute truth, only the lens through which each individual perceives it.

Questions and answers follow each lecture and a reception closes the evening’s event. Future lectures are scheduled for late March and late April. The lectures are in the Forest Room of the Bayou Building, 2700 Bay Area Blvd., Houston. Parking is free in the Visitors’ Lot and Student Lot D. Contact 281-283-3300 for more information.
