Registration is underway for educators from across the Houston-Galveston and surrounding areas to attend the 2018 Greater Houston Area STEM Conference on Saturday, March 3, 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. at the University of Houston-Clear Lake.
The event is being co-sponsored by UH-Clear Lake and University of Texas Medical Branch. Titled, “New Horizons and Innovations in STEM,” the conference will feature concurrent presentations, STEM-related exhibitors, door prizes, and tours of current state-of-the-art research facilities. Keynote speaker is Kenn Heydrick, a 35-year educator with a rich STEM background including serving as the Director of Science Curriculum at the Texas Education Agency.
“This is a practitioner-based conference designed for educators,” said conference coordinator and UHCL Associate Professor Michelle Peters from the College of Education. “One of the main goals of the conference is to provide educators insightful ways to integrate the STEM components of science, technology, engineering and mathematics into their classrooms to demonstrate real-world STEM applications. To that end there will be a multitude of presentations that show ways to accomplish this important integration.”
“In addition, some of our own UHCL engineering, computer science and digital arts faculty are presenting and have exhibits on projects they’re currently working on.”
Heydrick will wrap up the day’s event with his keynote presentation, “STEM Education for the Future.” In addition to his work at the TEA, he spent 15 years as a district-level science coordinator, 10 years as a high school science teacher, and five years as a university professor coordinating STEM programs.
Teachers who attend the conference will receive seven hours of CPE. UHCL is located at 2700 Bay Area Blvd., Houston.
