As University of Houston-Clear Lake’s first on-campus residence hall nears completion, Student Housing and Residential Life Director Matthew Perry said he’s looking for a few good men and women to build a fun, diverse and servant leadership-focused team of resident advisers for the newly named Hunter Hall.
“We are definitely looking to hire a diverse and inclusive staff of RAs,” Perry said. “We are looking for men and women who are either undergraduate or graduate students from across all races, ethnicities and sexual orientations to create a staff that represents our UH-Clear Lake’s population.”
Perry said the RA position is prestigious and sought-after. “It’s one of the most challenging and rewarding student leadership positions you can have on a college campus,” he said. “You learn life skills, time management, crisis management, program and event planning and administrative skills that are invaluable. There are very few student leadership positions that are like this one.”
He said that when Hunter Hall officially opens in fall 2019, his office would move there from its current location in the Student Services and Classroom Building. “We are in the process of hiring a residence life coordinator, who will live in Hunter Hall,” he said.
Students have much to gain from their experience living alongside an excellent RA, Perry said. “Students acquire good life skills, learn to talk to their peers, and learn a lot about how to handle conflicts,” he said. “RAs can also help students learn to navigate the campus and learn about the resources available to them.”
RAs are compensated with free room and a $700 meal plan, as well as a monthly stipend. The job description includes weekly staff meetings and engaging students in a variety of programs and events centered around community building, programming and event planning, crisis management, tour coordination, front desk operations, student support and other administrative tasks.
“We want people who are willing to extend their leadership skills to the student population as servant leaders,” Perry said. “It’s always our goal to have a safe and inclusive environment in our residence hall. I anticipate a lot of people applying for the positions we have available.”
Perry added that part of his role was to set up policies and procedures with other departments and offices to clarify the changes that will inevitably occur with a residence hall on campus. “We will have it all in place by the time Hunter Hall opens,” he said.
Hunter Hall will have suite-style rooms with a community kitchen on each floor. “We’re looking for resident advisers who will connect with students and make a positive impact in their lives,” Perry said.
