All invited to meet artist of ‘When the Water Rises’ exhibit

The public is invited to meet artist Julie Heffernan when she visits University of Houston-Clear Lake during the closing week of her traveling exhibition, “When the Water Rises,” her introspective reflection on the reality of climate change. The exhibition runs through March 21 in the UH-Clear Lake Art Gallery, located in the Bayou Building, 2700 Bay Area Blvd., Houston.

Heffernan said she wanted to create a powerful body of work to get a conversation going on the topic of climate change. “I hoped to give visual form to something that people couldn’t imagine on their own,” she said.

Heffernan’s will conduct a free lecture on Tuesday, March 19, 4-5 p.m., in either the Art Gallery or Bayou Theater, based on attendance. A reception follows 6-8 p.m. On Wednesday, March 20, noon – 1 p.m., all are welcome to a bring-your-own “Lunch and Learn.”

Lecture Series: How useful is a physics degree inside NASA?

Tietronix President Frank Hughes, former chief of space flight training at NASA Johnson Space Center, will recount how his physics degree boosted his career goals and aspirations on March 18 as University of Houston-Clear Lake’s spring Physics Lecture Series continues.

Hughes spent 33 years at NASA using his technical and managerial skills to improve training for space flight. He joined Tietronix after retiring from JSC. Tietronix provides software development, game design, trainings and simulations, process management as well as medical and solar energy services.

The lecture series is 7 p.m. each Monday through April 29 in room 1203 of the STEM and Classroom Building, 2700 Bay Area Blvd., Houston. The lectures are free. UHCL profs help judge regional science and engineering fair

Twelve University of Houston-Clear Lake professors participated as judges in the annual Science and Engineering Fair of Houston held Feb. 23-24 at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston.

The event brings together public, private, chartered and home-schooled junior- and senior-high school students throughout southeast Texas to compete in one of the world’s largest regional science fairs. SEFH serves the Houston area as well as the 22 surrounding counties. Major regional fair winners are eligible to compete in the annual International Science and Engineering Fair.

UH-Clear Lake faculty included Assistant Professor and Program Chair of Chemistry Anton Dubrovskiy, Professor Emeritus Dennis Casserly, Assistant Professor of Software Engineering and Program Chair Michael Findler, Lecturer of Biological Sciences Stephen Gruber, Lecturer of Chemistry Rio Lirag, Assistant Professor of Computer Engineering Jiang Lu, Associate Professor of Industrial Hygiene and Safety Robert Phalen, Assistant Professor of Engineering Management Xiaojun “Gene” Shan, Associate Professor of Biotechnology and Biology Brian Stephens, Lecturer of Biology Patricia Trubl, Associate Professor in Curriculum and Instruction Sandra Watson and Assistant Professor of Computer Engineering Xiaokun Yang.
