UHCL offers coding camp for qualifying middle-school girls

Girls in grades 6-8 who qualify can attend a free, one-week summer camp to learn programming basics at University of Houston-Clear Lake’s Soaring Hawks Girls Code Academy, or Camp Code.

Camp Code is intended to increase middle-school girls’ interest in coding and programming by providing hands-on experiences in learning, problem solving and analytical skills-building – simultaneously fostering an interest in careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

Three camp sessions are offered. Each session will host up to 25 girls. Participants may only attend one week. Camp dates are July 15-19 or Aug. 5-9, from 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. in UH-Clear Lake’s STEM and Classroom Building.

To qualify, participants must be from underrepresented populations, including minorities, low social economic status, military youth or youth in foster care. Apply for Camp Code online. For more information, visit UHCL’s Center for Educational Programs or call 281-283-3529.

Nursing conference at UHCL Pearland Sept. 6

University of Houston-Clear Lake at Pearland is hosting its annual professional conference for nurses on Friday, Sept. 6 from 8 a.m – 5:45 p.m. The campus is located at 1200 Pearland Pkwy., Pearland.

This year’s conference is titled, “Nursing Documentation: Transforming Data to Improve Nurse and Patient Outcomes.” Registration cost includes lunch, parking, and continuing nursing education (CNE) contact hours approved by the Texas Nurses Association. For TNA members, early-bird registration through Aug. 1 is $125 and $150 from Aug. 1 to Sept. 2. Walk-in registrations and non-TNA members pay $175. Undergraduate, non-RN students pay $50. The first 10 students to register receive a discount.

UHCL’s summer Friday Morning lecture series continues July 19

University of Houston-Clear Lake’s Friday Morning Continuing Education summer miniseries continues July 19 with two lectures to attend. Learn about Purple Martins at 9 a.m. and the art of Japan at 11 a.m.

Matthew Fendley, UHCL systems coordinator for Academic Computing/Systems and Networking, will give tips on how to attract Purple Martins and discuss identification and migration. Jennifer Lehnert, UHCL Art School instructor, will present authentic Japanese artifacts to inspire your creativity. Bring a soap bar to carve your own netsuke.

The Friday Morning Continuing Education program is open to all, regardless of age, residency, or academic background. The cost for each class in the summer miniseries is $12 after a $12 membership fee. To register or for more information, call 281-283-3033.

UHCL open registration for fall semester continues

Open registration for University of Houston-Clear Lake’s fall semester continues through Aug. 23. No appointments are necessary.

UH-Clear Lake is a four-year university which offers more than 90 undergraduate and graduate degree programs, as well as three doctoral programs. The university serves a diverse student population with a variety of programs in business, education, human sciences and humanities, and science and engineering.
