‘Tonight Tonight’ singer John King coming to Bayou Theater

Rising country music artist John King, now on nationwide tour, brings his band to University of Houston-Clear Lake’s Bayou Theater on Nov. 15, 7:30 p.m., 2700 Bay Area Blvd., Houston.

King earned his first Top 40 hit with “Tonight Tonight,” the 2014 theme song for CBS Thursday Night Football. King is also earning national recognition as a songwriter. In early 2016, King experienced his first No. 1  with a song called “We Went” recorded by artist Randy Houser. King co-wrote the song with friends, Matt Rogers and Justin Wilson and received a 2016 ASCAP Songwriter Award for the song's success. He has since written songs for some of country music’s biggest stars.

Tickets are $20 for adults and $13 for students.

UHCL Faculty Exhibition to open Nov. 15

An exhibition of art created by art faculty will be on display in University of Houston-Clear Lake’s Art Gallery, 2700 Bay Area Blvd., Houston. The exhibition opens Nov. 15 and runs through Dec. 13. A reception will be held Nov. 15 from 5-7 p.m. The reception and the exhibition are free and open to the public.

Five full-time faculty and five or six adjunct faculty members of UH-Clear Lake’s Art Department are submitting art from across all media, said Assistant Professor of Art and Design Lauren Kussro. “This is a chance for students and faculty to see what the art faculty is doing in their areas of research,” she said. “This will showcase all of us and the work we do.”

Kussro teaches printmaking at UHCL. Adjunct professors will be submitting one piece and full-time faculty may submit up to five pieces. “We’ll have works in ceramics, sculpture, collage, video, photography, graphic design and textiles,” Kussro said.

University of Houston-Clear Lake’s students in the bachelor of fine arts program will display their talents in the 2018 Fall Senior Seminar BFA Show, Nov. 13-27 in the Arbor North Building, 2700 Bay Area Blvd., Houston.

Learn network security and more at UHCL’s Cyber Security Institute

Looking to advance in your information technology career? Take University of Houston-Clear Lake’s course, “Implementing Network Security,” part of the Cyber Security Institute’s network management and security program.

In this course, students will learn about network security, firewall configuration, enabling virtual private networks and more to protect information on network devices through hands-on examples with live equipment. Students who register should be familiar with IP addressing, Windows operating system and Cisco IOS networking. Classes are Fridays 3-8 p.m. and Saturdays 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. on Nov. 16-17, Nov. 30 – Dec. 1, Dec. 7-8 and Dec. 14-15. The course fee is $1,300. Learn to write successful STEM grants for your classroom

Educators K-12 will explore links to potential funding sources and additional information on available teacher programs, strategies, and tips that will help to make their grant proposals more successful in the course, “How to Write Successful Grants for Your STEM Classroom” from University of Houston-Clear Lake’s Center for Educational Programs.

The course is Saturday, Nov. 17 from 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. in room 1310.05 of the Arbor Building, 2700 Bay Area Blvd., Houston. The presenter is Sha’Rell Webb, an eighth-grade science teacher who has earned about $18,000 for her classroom. Fees for this session are $65. Attendees need to bring a fully charged computer or tablet for this session. Autism Speaker Series: Why punishment is last option

Alexis Marcouex will provide tips and best practices for effective alternatives to punishment in the Autism Speaker Series, “Why Punishment Should be Last Option and What to Do Instead,” Saturday Nov. 17, 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. in the Garden Room of the University of Houston-Clear Lake Bayou Building, 2700 Bay Area Blvd., Houston.

The free presentation is part of an ongoing speaker series to educate the community on caring for children with autism or developmental disabilities, hosted by University of Houston-Clear Lake’s Center for Autism and Developmental Disabilities.
