Send your future wordsmith to Young Writers Camp

Do you have a budding author in your family? Sign them up for Young Writers Camp in University of Houston-Clear Lake’s Kids U summer program, July 10-13, for students in grades 7-12.

The four-day camp features two sessions taught by UHCL College of Education Instructional Associate Emma Sobey. The 8:30-11:30 a.m. session, titled “Mysteria Mania: Games, Mysteries, Puzzles, and More,” will focus on critical-thinking and deductive-reasoning skills. Students will solve a variety of mysteries, logic puzzles and strategy games to help them understand how authors use clues to entice and surprise readers.

From noon – 3 p.m., students will explore brainstorming techniques and writing strategies in a session titled, “Write Your Own Adventure Stories,” which will improve their creative and academic writing.

Morning and afternoon sessions are $139 each. Sessions are limited to 10 students each. The Writing Camp is held in the center Arbor Building, 2700 Bay Area Blvd., Houston.

Learn about UHCL Pearland at July 8 open house

Learn more about course offerings at University of Houston-Clear Lake Pearland Campus at an open house for prospective students on Saturday, July 8, 10 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., 1200 Pearland Parkway, Pearland. Families are welcome.

Students who attend can apply for free, meet faculty, visit enrollment counselors and financial aid advisers. On-the-spot admissions decisions will be available for select programs, and applicants wanting to participate should bring transcripts and test scores. Critically acclaimed film ‘Lost in Paris’ comes to UHCL

Well received by critics and audiences throughout Europe, the 2016 comedy “Lost in Paris,” will be presented in July as part of University of Houston-Clear Lake’s Film and Speaker Series. The series provides entertainment and facilitated discussions around each movie’s relevant topics.

The presentation is 7 p.m. Saturday, July 22, in the Student Services and Classroom Building lecture hall, 2700 Bay Area Blvd., Houston. Foreign Language and Continuing Education Programs Director Christine Paul will provide a “petite French lesson” before the film.

Focusing on a young woman who visits Paris for the first time, the movie explores the young woman who encounters catastrophes involving a homeless man. Unrated, the movie stars and is co-directed by Fiona Gordon and Dominique Abel, of whom Variety’s chief film critic Peter Debruge says channels the comedy of Charlie Chaplain and Buster Keaton.

American Revolution, genealogy Friday Morning topics

University of Houston-Clear Lake’s Friday Morning Continuing Education’s summer mini-session kicks off July 7 with an exploration of the American Revolution and practical methods of tracing your family’s roots.

Discuss the hopes of the nation’s founders and how this experiment in democracy changed the world in the presentation “America in Revolution: A City on the Hill” beginning 9 a.m. in the Bayou Building Patio Café, 2700 Bay Area Blvd., Houston. At 11 a.m., learn how to use the Internet to trace your family history in “Tracking Your Ancestors: Genealogy 101.” Please bring a laptop or iPad.

Continue the discussions afterward at lunch with presenters and fellow learners. Lunch is not provided.
