New freshman students, families can tour UHCL campus

Freshman students and their families are invited to visit University of Houston-Clear Lake at 10 a.m. on June 23 or July 14 for a one- to two-hour walking tour led by current UHCL students. Attendees will also receive information about applying to the university. The tour begins at the university’s Student Services and Classroom Building, 2700 Bay Area Blvd., Houston.

Popular stops on the tour include Alfred R. Neumann Library, the UHCL Art Gallery and natural features such as Potter’s Pond and Horsepen Bayou. What will your Pre-K child learn this summer?

It’s not too late for children ages 3-5 to learn, grow and play in University of Houston-Clear Lake’s Kids U discovery-based summer program, which runs through mid-July.

Each week features new opportunities – and ideal experience for children who will be transitioning into early childhood programs or those who would benefit from engaging in open-ended, creative play-based experiences involving math, science and literature. The Kids U staff – experienced early-childhood teachers under the direction of UHCL faculty – focuses on helping children develop conceptual skill that promote problem-solving, imagination and language. The Discovery camp runs from 8:30-11:30 a.m. Mondays through Thursdays. Camps are held in the center Arbor Building, 2700 Bay Area Blvd., Houston.

Kids U runs six camps that target different interests at different ages, through 12th grade.

UHCL Friday Morning classes continue July 7-21

University of Houston-Clear Lake’s Friday Morning Continuing Education’s summer mini-session will explore a “revolutionary” theme July 7-21 at the Bayou Building Patio Café, 2700 Bay Area Blvd., Houston.

Topics include the American Revolution, the French Revolution and intellectual revolutions in literature. Other topics are genealogy, Paris trip planning, Mexican art and digital augmented reality.

Each Friday features two classes from 9-10:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Continue the discussions afterward at lunch with presenters and fellow learners. Lunch is not provided in the fee.

Graduate students’ sculptures on display

See graduate students’ diverse expressions through sculpture in the University of Houston-Clear Lake Art Gallery, on display through Aug. 10 in the Bayou Building Art Gallery, 2700 Bay Area Blvd., Houston.

Curated by Clay Leonard, assistant professor of art, the exhibit highlights the research interests of seven graduate students in Sculpture and Ceramics studio courses: Natasha Gallagher, David Gonzalez, Holly Gottula, David Moya, Wyatt Schultz, Margaret Solomon-Bird, and Colleen Steblein.
