Society recognizes UHCL professor for teaching, mentorship

The Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues selected University of Houston-Clear Lake Professor of Women’s Studies and Psychology Kim A. Case as recipient of the 2017 Outstanding Teaching and Mentoring Award. She shares the award with a University of London professor.
“I feel honored and privileged to be receiving an award from an organization I truly respect,” said Case. “I don’t think I’ve done anything unusual to receive such an honor; I just try to offer my students the best possible educational experience. It’s what they deserve.”
The society’s selection committee unanimously selected Case, stating that her “brand of teaching and mentoring epitomizes SPSSI values,” and invited her to present in a June conference in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Case serves as UHCL’s director of applied social issues concentration within the psychology graduate program. She is author of two books that focus on strategies for teaching about identity, social justice and privilege.
“Dr. Case’s selection for this award is no surprise to us,” said Rick Short, dean of UHCL’s College of Human Sciences and Humanities. “She has done much to elevate the academic conversations surrounding social prejudices.”
In 2016, Case was named the society’s recipient of its distinguished service award. Case is also recipient of a teaching award from the national Social Psychology Network, the UHCL Distinguished Faculty Teaching Award, UHCL Alumni Association’s Outstanding Professor Award, and a past university nominee for the statewide prestigious Minnie Stevens Piper Teaching Award.
The SPSSI was founded in 1936 by social scientists and social-minded psychologists to address social justice and economic issues, civic responsibility as well as global peace and conflict.
