UHCL and UTMB to Co-Host Greater Houston Area STEM Conference

University of Houston-Clear Lake and the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston
will co-host the first annual Greater Houston Area STEM Conference, Saturday, March
4, 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. More than 200 educators from 20 school districts in the Houston-Galveston
and surrounding areas have already registered to attend the one-day event at UH-Clear
Lake, 2700 Bay Area Blvd., Houston.
The conference, titled “New Horizons and Innovations in STEM,” will feature concurrent presentations and STEM-related exhibitors, as well as Hollywood stuntman and keynote speaker Steve Wolf who will present, “Science in the Movies.”
“STEM education is the key to our future,” said UHCL College of Education Associate Professor of Educational Foundations Michelle Peters, who is coordinating the university-wide STEM initiative. “The challenge is that few truly understand what STEM should look like in the classroom. Educators have a good grasp on the key components – science, technology, engineering and mathematics – but struggle with the challenge of integrating.”
“We’ll have several presentations that demonstrate how to accomplish this integration which teachers will be able to use in their classrooms,” she noted. “In addition, some of our own UHCL engineering, computer science and digital arts faculty are presenting and have exhibits on projects they’re currently working on. This is a practitioner-based conference designed for educators.”
Keynote speaker Wolf is president of Wolf Stuntworks LLC and founder of Science in the Movies, an organization that teaches physics and chemistry through stunt demonstrations. His lively and entertaining address will reveal the STEM concepts behind movie stunts and special effects.
Among exhibitors attending are the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA), The Harris Foundation, the Houston Zoo, Fischer Scientific, Tietronic Software, Accelerated Learning, Scientific Minds, and the UT Austin Center for STEM.
Teachers who attend can receive seven credit hours of continuing professional education (CPE).
