University of Houston-Clear Lake’s nearly-completed residence hall now has a name: Hunter Hall.

The name comes after a contest hosted by the Division of Student Affairs in the fall 2018 semester that allowed students, faculty, staff and alumni to share their ideas. After two weeks and 86 submissions, six finalists were selected by division leadership.

In the second phase of the contest, university core leadership reviewed the finalists with Fitness and Human Performance major Jeanne Rodriguez emerging has the winner. As the top pick, she wins a gift card from the UHCL Bookstore, lunch with Interim Vice President of Student Affairs Dr. Daniel Maxwell and Director of UHCL Student Housing and Residential Life Matthew Perry. Additionally, Rodriguez will be invited to participate in the grand opening ceremony of Hunter Hall.

Maxwell said that the ultimate goal is to create a partnership with a donor to officially name the residence hall through a gift, but is excited to welcome students to Hunter Hall.

“By giving the residence hall a temporary name, we will be able to more effectively market the residence hall both on the Student Housing and Residential Life website and in our UHCL campus communications,” Perry said.

UHCL broke ground on Hunter Hall in June 2018. The new facility will hold 294 beds and will include study lounges, community kitchen and lounge, laundry facilities, outside patio and more. Students will be able to choose from three suite configurations: two single-bed rooms with a shared bathroom, two double-bed rooms with a shared bathroom, or a single-bed room with a private bathroom. The hall is set to open in fall 2019.

Hunter Hall will complement the partnership with University Forest Apartments, which has supported on-campus housing for the past 25 years. Now, students will have another option for living on campus.

Current and accepted UHCL students with a student username can fill out a Housing Interest Form to submit their name for consideration to live in Hunter Hall. For more information, visit UHCL Student Housing and Residential Life
