University of Houston-Clear Lake’s College of Education recognized the student recipients of Success Through Education Programs scholarships at the program’s fall 2016 Kickoff Luncheon. STEP is a collaborative effort between UH-Clear Lake, five area school districts, and five community colleges designed to create opportunities for students to explore teaching as a profession and to prepare them to become certified teachers. The annual kickoff event gives STEP students an opportunity to get acquainted with each other, as well as lunch with College of Education faculty members, and to ask questions and receive advice and tips for ensuring academic success. The luncheon also featured a panel of three STEP research assistants, Shanael Evans, Patsy Chavez and Vanessa Cisneros, who fielded questions and offered first-hand advice on getting the most out of school and the program. Pictured with COE Associate Dean and Professor Joan Pedro (center) are STEP scholarship winners (l to r) Adriana Chapa, Shanael Evans, Crystal Guerra and Linda DeLaRosa. Not pictured are Olivia Dillion, Kimberly Ramirez and Christen Symmons. UH-Clear Lake STEP partners include Goose Creek Consolidated Independent School District and Lee College, Galveston Independent School District and Galveston College, Galena Park Independent School District and San Jacinto-North Community College, Houston Independent School District and Houston Community College-Southeast, and Santa Fe Independent School District and San Jacinto College South.
