After a nationwide search, University of Houston-Clear Lake President Ira K. Blake announced the selection of W. Brad McGonagle as its new executive director of Human Resources. He comes to UH-Clear Lake with more than 22 years of human resources experience.
“Dr. McGonagle has the experience and expertise we need to build and expand on the programs already in place to strengthen the university’s current faculty and staff and the employment of our future university team members,” said Blake.
McGonagle comes to UHCL with significant higher education experience including most recently serving as human resources administrator for the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston’s School of Nursing. Prior higher education experience includes 13 years with Texas A&M University at Galveston, where he served first as director of Human Resources before being named associate vice president for Administration and Human Resources.
“I chose to interview at UHCL because I’ve always been a fan of this university,” McGonagle said. “The interview process was really incredible. I had a warm, welcoming feeling from everyone. I knew it would be a perfect fit.”
As associate vice president, McGonagle provided divisional leadership for all non-academic functions on campus, as well as managed all employee relations and personnel matters. He also served as the campus representative to the System Benefits and Compensation oversight panel, while also developing and implementing campus Emergency Preparedness Plan, Emergency Communications Plan and Business Continuity Plan.
McGonagle said that he shared President Blake’s vision for the future success of the university. “With my experience and expertise in higher education and human resources administration, I feel I can be a successful contributor to the university’s mission.”
He added that he felt it was very important for the Human Resources department to be a leader in promoting ownership and commitment to the president’s vision for UHCL’s students, faculty and staff while serving as principal contributor to the university’s development and growth.
McGonagle holds a doctorate in Human Resource Development and Management from Texas A&M University. He began his position June 6.
A search committee, led by UH System Associate Vice Chancellor Joan Nelson, included seven UHCL faculty and staff: Senior Coordinator of Employment Abby Varela; Senior Business Coordinator Carla Salter-Eaglin; College of Human Sciences and Humanities Associate Dean Samuel Gladden; Associate Professor of Biology and Biotechnology Larry Rohde; UHCL Police Chief Allen Hill; Assistant Director of Student Life Patrick Cardenas; and Professor of Legal Studies and Management Alix Valenti.
