Riders in the Sky bring Western swing, cowboy comedy to Bayou Theater

When “Ranger” Doug Green was a boy, he heard his uncles playing guitar and yodeling. After listening to the country and folk singer Jimmie Rodgers do the same, Green was hooked and he knew he’d found his calling. In 1977, he formed a trio that ultimately became a Grammy-winning quartet of Western singers and songwriters called Riders in the Sky. They’ll perform their hilarious blend of cowboy comedy and “in-tune singing” at University of Houston-Clear Lake’s Bayou Theater Wednesday, Dec. 19 at 7:30 p.m.

From 352 to 164 pounds: success story from low-carb conference

Like millions of Americans, 59-year-old design engineer Jim Caldwell struggled with his weight. Although he’d tried to make changes, nothing worked for long. Inspired in part by some YouTube videos by Webster-based cardiologist Nadir Ali, Caldwell learned how a low-carb, high-fat diet could improve his health and was able to complete a successful weight-loss journey. He flew from his home in Chicago to attend University of Houston-Clear Lake’s recent Low Carb Houston Conference, held Oct. 25-27, to learn more about nutrition and to share his weight-loss success with others.

UHCL Pearland Campus offers doctoral degree in educational leadership

There’s a reason why Antonio Corrales is such a strong supporter of University of Houston-Clear Lake’s Doctorate in Educational Leadership program. He graduated from the program himself in 2015, and is now an assistant professor of educational leadership and its program director. He’s especially happy, he says, because the doctoral program will offer its second doctoral cohort at University of Houston-Clear Lake Pearland Campus, beginning in fall 2019.

Silsbee, Texas resident Lori Harvey, 48, attended the Low Carb Houston Conference recently held at University of Houston-Clear Lake because she had struggled with her weight as well as diabetes, high blood pressure, and other chronic ailments.

Restaurateur shares his passion for live performances at Bayou Theater

Two years ago, Charlie Felts went to a performance at University of Houston-Clear Lake’s Bayou Theater and saw an excellent show – and a lot of potential. Felts, the owner of Opus Ocean Grille in Kemah and the soon-to-open Opus Bistro in the South Shore Harbour Resort and Conference Center in League City, decided to renew his sponsorship for the 2018-19 theater season, enabling the theater to offer 19 performances.

UHCL fall commencement ceremonies Dec. 16 at NRG Arena

Over 1,050 University of Houston-Clear Lake students are expected to graduate this semester. Of those, approximately 892 plan to cross the stage at two commencement ceremonies on Sunday, Dec. 16 at NRG Arena, 1 NRG Park, Houston. A total of 667 will receive bachelor’s degrees, 377 will receive master’s degrees, and 12 will receive doctorate degrees. Additionally, 164 of 294 summer 2018 graduates plan to receive their diplomas at this commencement ceremony.
