Fall 2018 Common Reader selection explores themes of identity, vocation

A selection committee composed of faculty, staff and a student representative have recommended the book “Callings: The Purpose and Passion of Work” by Dave Isay to be the focus of University of Houston-Clear Lake’s fall 2018 Common Reader Program. The committee chose the book because it explores overarching themes that resonate with the UH-Clear Lake student population.

With the first book of the trilogy, “Crazy Rich Asians,” to be released in movie theaters this summer, Kevin Kwan has been living what might be described as a dream. But the University of Houston-Clear Lake 1994 alumnus said for him, his years working toward his bachelor’s degree in media studies were the “dream experience.”

One of the first things University of Houston-Clear Lake Professor of Counseling Cheryl Sawyer will insist when she is called in after a tragedy is that it is not about her – it is about the mental well-being of the victims and those who knew the victims. After hearing about the shooting at Santa Fe High School, Sawyer knew there would be a need and she reached out her school connections and immediately put her lifetime work into action.

UHCL profs join Million Dollar Club for receiving grants supporting programs

This month, Associate Professors of Behavior Analysis Sarah Lechago and Jennifer Fritz learned their efforts had culminated in receiving an honor reserved for the faculty’s top money-raisers: entrance into UHCL’s $1 Million Club, as acknowledged by the Office of Sponsored Programs. Their names will be added to a plaque honoring 30 other professors who have also raised $1 million on behalf of the university.

UHCL biotechnologist eyeing damage to Gulf coral reefs

University of Houston-Clear Lake biotechnologist Lory Santiago-Vazquez is keeping close watch on the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary, a system of coral reefs about 100 nautical miles east of Galveston in the Gulf of Mexico. The sanctuary provides habitat for many threatened and protected species – corals, sharks, rays, sea turtles and marine mammals – as well as several species important to the fishing industry.

In 1946, Houston resident Ruth Ann Skaff’s father, the Very Reverend Thomas Skaff, became the first American-born man of Arab descent in the U.S. to become ordained as a priest in the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America – at the time called the Syrian Antiochian Orthodox Church. He was ordained in Sioux City, Iowa and probably never thought he would be responsible for documenting a significant segment of Arab-American history in Houston.

University of Houston-Clear Lake Assistant Professor of History Neal Dugre has been awarded the 2017 Walter Muir Whitehill Prize in Early American History for an article written about one of his areas of expertise—seventeenth-century New England.

UH-Clear Lake to implement tobacco-free policy Aug. 1

University of Houston-Clear Lake has been designated a campus-wide tobacco-free campus. Effective Aug. 1, the new policy will prohibit the use of all tobacco products in university buildings and on all university grounds.
