ACC expands offerings at UHCL Pearland Campus

With the success of Alvin Community College’s newly- forged partnership to offer courses on the University of Houston-Clear Lake Pearland Campus beginning in fall 2017, Cynthia Griffith, vice president of instruction at ACC said the college is expanding its course offerings.
Houston authors share works about loss, hardship at open mic event

Although Hurricane Harvey’s high waters have long receded, many University of Houston-Clear Lake students are still struggling with the after-effects. That’s why Assistant Professor of Literature Joanna Eleftheriou, together with UH-Clear Lake’s Writing Center, have scheduled an open-mic event entitled, “Renewal,” on March 28 from 6-9 p.m. in the Garden Room of the Bayou Building. Audiences have the chance to hear two accomplished, recently published local authors as well as members of the audience who wish to share poetry or fiction of their own which deals with the theme of renewal.

UHCL prof highlights human rights abuses of refugees in book

Dawit Woldu, assistant professor of anthropology and cross-cultural studies at University of Houston-Clear Lake, would like to clear up misconceptions about how refugees obtain asylum in the United States. He and his colleagues – Assistant Professor of Anthropology, Christine Kovic and Assistant Professor of Applied Sciences Isabelle Kusters – will discuss refugee-related topics on March 5 from 7 p.m-9pm. in the Forest Room of the Bayou Building.

It took Missouri City resident Patricia Landa-Hernandez a long time to walk across the stage to collect her Master of Arts in Humanities from University of Houston-Clear Lake. For students juggling work and family responsibilities, staying focused on an academic goal can be almost impossibly difficult. With the help of her family and some key professors in UH-Clear Lake’s Department of Humanities, she achieved her goal in December 2017.
Engineering professor showcases passion for music in piano recital

Ipek Bozkurt started taking piano lessons at the age of six; she had a piano at home, and her father played it. She was intrigued by the piano. “I wanted to do it, and it has become my passion,” said Bozkurt, who is an associate professor of engineering management in University of Houston-Clear Lake’s College of Science and Engineering. She will share her passion for the piano in a recital in UH-Clear Lake’s Bayou Theater on Friday, Feb. 23 at 7:30 p.m
Message in ‘Hidden Figures’ fosters mentorships at UH-Clear Lake

This year, the Common Reader Program at University of Houston-Clear Lake includes a real-life application of an element that comes directly from the assigned book, “Hidden Figures.” The book, which was made into an Oscar-nominated film in 2016, is the true story of a team of female African-American mathematicians who served a vital role in NASA during the early years of the U.S. space program. The plot focuses on themes such as race, the role of women in science and technology fields – and mentorship.

Our group left Muscat today via four-by-fours to head toward Sur. We stopped to look at an amazing and gorgeous sinkhole. While we were there, we saw tourists swimming in the sinkhole in bikinis. After speaking with locals, we found out they were uncomfortable going to the sinkhole, particularly with bringing their children, because of the way the tourists dressed.

Our day began with visiting tombs, the remains of a castle, and archaeological site. As we explored the tomb of the sultan's mother, we learned an interesting piece of history: tombstones are not elaborate and are identical because everyone is considered equal, even the royal family.
