Fiddling brothers to bring bluegrass holiday tunes to Bayou Theater

With a father who’s been a professor of music and composition for 35 years, it’s no wonder that Wallace, Alex, Jason and Zachary DePue all became classically trained violinists. But growing up in Ohio, bluegrass fiddling became the group’s genre of choice. They’ll bring their particular brand of “progressive bluegrass” to celebrate the holidays at the Bayou Theater at University of Houston-Clear Lake on Wednesday, Dec. 18 at 7:30 p.m.

When Lynsey Jackson received her bachelor’s in psychology, she wasn’t sure what her career path should be. After seeing a bulletin board with a flyer advertising an information session about working with children with autism, she thought it might be interesting. She was right: It led to her receiving her Master of Arts in Behavior Analysis from University of Houston-Clear Lake, and she believes she has found her life’s calling.

UHCL fall commencement ceremonies Dec. 15 at NRG Arena

Over 1270 University of Houston-Clear Lake students are expected to cross the stage at two commencement ceremonies on Sunday, Dec. 15 at NRG Arena, 1 NRG Park, Houston. A total of 850 will receive bachelor’s degrees; 424 will receive their master’s degree and 14 will receive their doctorate.

Grammy winner Terrance Simien and the Zydeco Experience to take center stage at the Bayou Theater

Anyone who meets Terrance Simien at one of his Zydeco Experience concerts might have a chance to do more than shake his hand or take a picture with him. If you ask, he might let you hold his Grammy award. Simien, who has won two Grammys in 2007 and 2008 for Best Zydeco or Cajun Music Album of the Year, will be performing at University of Houston-Clear Lake’s Bayou Theater on Saturday, Nov. 23 at 7:30 p.m.

Assistant Professor of Nursing Karen Alexander says she knew she wanted to be a nurse since she was 6 years old. However, she also knew the path that would lead her there was through the military, following in the footsteps of her father, brother, aunts, uncles and cousins. She shared her journey with the University of Houston-Clear Lake community at a special ceremony honoring veterans held Veterans Day, Nov. 11.

Communications prof starts career in TV, finds real reward in teaching

Anna Klyueva began her academic career in studying economics in her native Tajikistan. While in her freshman year there, she was invited to audition for a position on a popular local television show. At the audition, she was “warned” that once she got into the media world, she would never want to turn back. Now an assistant professor of communication at University of Houston-Clear Lake, Klyueva says that her philosophy of teaching has been to keep one foot in the profession and the other in education, so that what she teaches and assigns is always relevant.

Mercury to bring light, amusing selections from Mozart and Beethoven to Bayou Theater

Mercury Artistic Director Antoine Plante says that the orchestra’s upcoming performance of Mozart and Beethoven will be one of the biggest symphonic concerts of their season, with about 40 musicians onstage. The performance, to take place at University of Houston-Clear Lake’s Bayou Theater on Friday, Nov. 15 at 7:30 p.m., will include some of the finest woodwind musicians from all over the world as well as two music fellowship students from The Juilliard School.
