'Great day for all of us': NASA Johnson Space Center, UHCL expand partnership

University of Houston-Clear Lake would not exist had it not been for a request made in 1964 by then-NASA Johnson Space Center Director Robert Gilruth to then-University of Houston President Philip Hoffman to establish a permanent institution of higher education accessible to JSC staff, scientists and engineers. In 1974, UH-Clear Lake opened its doors, and in continued celebration of their shared bond, NASA JSC and UHCL signed the new Space Act Agreement and Annex on Oct. 1, affirming and expanding their partnership for the benefit of the entire community.

Sultanate of Oman, UHCL team up for science diplomacy conference

University of Houston-Clear Lake will host the Sultan Qaboos Cultural Center’s 10th Annual Conference Wednesday, Oct. 23 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The conference is a key educational initiative of the Sultanate of Oman and is titled, “UHCL-SQCC Energy and Environmental Stewardship: Oman and the U.S.”

Parrott, a native-born Mississippian, will share her life experiences as an African American child who came of age during the civil rights movement in a special University of Houston-Clear Lake Friday Morning Continuing Education program titled, “Eyewitness to History: Civil Rights Movement in Mississippi” on Nov. 1 at 11 a.m.

But in modern history, few antagonists have made such a calculated effort also to destroy every trace of their victims’ culture as ISIS, who has methodically destroyed countless historic artifacts in their quest for dominance in Kurdistan and Iraq. University of Houston-Clear Lake’s Art Gallery is currently exhibiting a collection by New York based British artist Piers Secunda entitled “ISIS Bullet Hole Paintings,” exploring the epic scale of cultural destruction the terrorist group has wrought upon that region.

The ketogenic, or low-carb way of eating is a relatively new addition to a toolkit of dietary and lifestyle interventions that can be very helpful for numerous medical conditions, including obesity, diabetes and heart disease. University of Houston-Clear Lake’s Exercise and Nutritional Health Institute is hosting the 2nd Annual Low Carb Houston Conference Oct. 24-26 in the Bayou Theater to address the contribution of nutrition and obesity to chronic disease.

Foundation provides UHCL scholarships for future child educators

The Samuels Family Foundation has given University of Houston-Clear Lake’s Early Childhood Education program, in the College of Education, a $400,000 grant to offer scholarships to graduate and undergraduate students seeking the education and credentials to become child care center directors. The grant will release $100,000 a year for four years.

University of Houston-Clear Lake’s Associate Professor of Art History Sarah Costello has been invited to Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium to be a visiting scholar at Universite Catholique de Louvain. During her two-week stay, Costello will be making three presentations to undergraduate and graduate students, as well as to the public, about museum-related topics.

Professor shares insights about sustaining a 'life of the mind' through ALS battle

When University of Houston-Clear Lake’s Associate Professor of History Dan Haworth went on leave this year, it wasn’t because he was ready to stop teaching and being a faculty member. Last year, he received a devastating diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS, forcing him to rethink his priorities. Despite the challenges he faces, Haworth is nowhere near done teaching. He still has a great deal to share with students, faculty and staff and the community.
