Blog: Profs collaborate with Kenyan university on faculty, student exchange program

For Dr. McMullen and me (Dr. Woldu), the second week at United States International University in Nairobi has been very busy with meetings and classes. We held two meetings on June 18. The first meeting was with Dr. Cassandra Veney, department chair of International Relations at USIU. We had a very fruitful discussion on student exchange, faculty exchange and the establishment of joint institutes. The International Relations department offers courses similar to what UHCL offers in our Cross Cultural and Global Studies program, so it is a natural fit.

Dr. Veney is very excited to collaborate with us in areas of faculty exchange and graduate student proposal reviews. She is also interested in working with our faculty in building a joint Peace and Conflict Resolution and Refugee and Immigration Studies Institute that will be housed at USIU.

Our second meeting was with Dr. Bonn Jonyo and Ms. Asena E. Salome, both from the school of graduate studies, research, and extension. Similarly, we discussed the three collaboration items with Dr. Bonn and Ms. Salome. Mike (Dr. McMullen) and I briefed them about our university and our interest in working with USIU on areas of research and professional development trainings.

Dr. Bonn and Ms. Salome also provided us with detailed information about their office and how they could help us in facilitating those initiatives, especially with the establishment of institutes and research collaborations. They both reassured us they will work with relevant academic and administrative units at USIU to help this collaborative initiative become a reality.

Next, we will be meeting with the dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Office of Study Abroad Programs and the Office of
E-learning.
