Blog: UHCL profs' research trip to Kenyan university culminates in visit to national
park
July 12, 2019 | Mike McMullen
Dr. Woldu (pictured right) and I (Dr. Mike McMullen, pictured left) are finishing
up our time in Kenya this week, having final meetings with faculty and administrators
at the United States International University-Africa as we enact the Memorandum of
Understanding signed by our two universities. We will end this week with me teaching my
final Research Methods class, and both of us participating in a campus-wide panel
discussion about collaborative research between professors on both campuses, and a
farewell lunch.
This past weekend, we took a trip to Lake Nakuru National Park about 160 kilometers
northwest of Nairobi. This is one of nearly 30 national parks throughout Kenya dedicated
to the preservation of wildlife and their habitat, and a possible study abroad site
visit. In fact, environmental responsibility is a point of pride for Kenya, boasting
the first African woman to receive the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize, Dr. Wangari Muta Maathai.
She was recognized for her promotion of sustainable development and its impact on
women’s empowerment and democracy. She is most famous for her “Green Belt Movement”
to combat deforestation.
We took a photo together on the shores of Lake Nakuru, proudly displaying our UHCL
pennant. Go Hawks!
